Lonely Whale: Strawless Oceans

OMG FACT #1: Every day in America, we use 500 million plastic straws. That’s enough plastic to wrap around the earth two and half times each day.

Yep, that’s right, 500 million per day. The vast majority of these straws are not recyclable. Throw your plastic cup with a straw in it into the recycling bin and the cup gets recycled but the straw does not. So what happens to the straw you ask? Well, that’s where things really start to get scary.

OMG FACT #2: Plastic straws kill sea life.

Plastic straws end up in either landfills or the ocean. From there, the plastic breaks down and is ingested by sea life — having a toxic effect and also becoming part of the food chain. (If you eat fish, you’ve likely ingested these plastics too.)

OMG FACT #3: If we don’t act now, by 2050, plastics in the ocean will outweigh the fish.

And these plastics will continue to cause toxic effects in marine life and the fish you and your family consumes. (All fish — even those with a “Sustainable” rating — currently contain small amounts of toxic plastics.)
